Here is beautiful Maggie age 31 - from 27 Laing Street - on a studio photograph in about 1914 with her brother Jim about to enter the fray. She is living with her recently widowed mother and four brothers. Did she marry? She must have had offers? Does anyone know what happened to her after this. The photo was obtained via Mrs Cave and I knew nothing about her then - assuming that Jim was her husband. Maybe the man in the picture is. Can anyone enlighten us? I believe that her younger brother William was the famous bookie's runner Billy O' Brien who stood on many street corners catering for the steelworker's regular flutter on the horses especially on pay day.
Just a line to let people know that the names of Grangetown people are still being stored here and the Old Boys Team that George played for has a similar strip to Grangetown Athletic - however there doesn't appear to be a complete strip - and maybe this team was a group determined to keep fit. I wonder how old George is on the photo. There's a clue to the year it was taken. I imagine George would be about 20 and date it therefore at 1911. And now that Libby's brother has re-taken the picture I just love the background houses and wonder where they actually were. We're now beginning to think it was a St Matthews Team because George was a choir boy there.
