Back Row: L-R Tom, Harry, Nellie, Joseph, Harriet, Jack, Walter, Annie, George
Front Row: Arthur, Walter, Elizabeth, Ada
According to family tradition, Walter Bareham b 1853 in Toppesfield Essex - walked the 274 miles to Durham looking for work. He met his future wife Elizabeth Hannah Sunley in Bishop Auckland market b 1861 and they married in Thornley Parish Church in Sept 1876.
In 1885, they moved to Grangetown with their 8 children to live in 31 Laing Street at the same time as her brother John William Sunley moved to 27 Bessemer Street with his wife Elizabeth ( nee Ardley) and his children.
By 1901 Walter and Elizabeth had 14 children and a larger house was called for. So they moved to 11 Pochin Rd and their in-laws the Sunleys moved nearby to number 21. But they unfortunately lost three of their children - Archer age 1 in 1894; Samuel at birth in 1901 and Fred in 1906 aged 7. But their household was still a happy one. All the family descended on the house on Sundays and the sound of hymn-singing could be heard down the street by all. They had an allotment on which they reared pigs and there were always hams hanging on hooks in the kitchen. Elizabeth died in 1927 - a year after their 50th wedding anniversary was celebrated and Walter five years later in 1932. courtesy of Sue Fishwick - Tom - on the back row - is Sue Fishwick's grandfather
