Cheetham Street c 1908
Holden Street 1912
I was told by Terry Duffy that his grandfather John Duffy can be spotted here - tall, smiling and wearing a cap on the back row next to the girls. He fished regularly at the Breakwater a few miles away to the east of the town - as many did. The owner of the picture Amy Brien from the USA, names those standing as : Louisa Heath, Frances Shaddack, Blanche Saddler, Amy Brien, Jane Ward , J Gatiss, ---? --- ; --- ? --- ; ---?--- ; John Duffy, --- ? --- ; His boat , Top O' The Morning - was kept at the local breakwater. A list of families on the electoral roll in 1911 would be useful here. Any takers? Incidentally my family O'Neill and another related Duffy family also lived in Holden Street in the forties.

Third from the left is barefooted Patrick Burke. Leaning on the handlebars of the large bicycle is Johnna McAuliffe and standing on the doorstep of No 77 is Mrs Simpson. On the reverse of this picture is written James Traynor - a well known cobbler who plied his trade from his house shop in one of the streets nearby.
The Lyric Cinema - built in the 1930's entertained everyone in Grangetown. A veritable haven for children.
The Police Station facing the main street - Whitworth Road - built to keep a watchful eye on its shebeening residents.
The Board School on Bolckow Road - built in the 1880's or so.
The entrance to Birchington Avenue Grangetown near the War Memorial.
The Bungalows of Grangetown occupied by the elderly - Here we have a couple enjoying the sun.
Prefabs - or prefabricated housing - designed to accomodate the increase in population after World War 2 - were quickly built and occupied by many happy families - such as this - the Waldon family of Stapylton Street whose many exploits are described on the fifties page.
The famous Eston Nab - a watchtower and Beacon with a link to Napoleonic times where people of the area ate their picnics and could even shop in distant times...not far from a village on top of the moor itself - where families lived and were schooled. It is said by some that the outlines and original stones can still be traced if you care to search.
Below is Argyle Road - with Social Club on the left - and police station and Bolckow Road and Whitworth Road ahead.
The Socal Club built in 1890's and the original St Mary's church built in 1905
A glimpse of Eston Junction and a plethora of Blast furnaces and another of Whitworth Rd in the sixties.
Below is Whitworth Rd - in 1911 and another of the White House on the road to Eston. The pikelet man lived there.
The image of Whitworth Rd on the left shows the Town Hall before it became Brown's Furniture Shop ( see right ) and there appears to be no glass in the Board school windows
